How to Prepare Your Appliances for Seasonal Changes
Seasonal shifts put extra stress on your home appliances. A little preparation can extend their life, improve efficiency, and reduce the chance of emergency repairs. Here’s a simple How-to guide to get your appliances ready for the new season.
Step 1. Prepare Your Furnace for Winter
Replace or clean the air filter.
Check the thermostat settings.
Clear the area around the furnace to avoid overheating.
Schedule a professional inspection before temperatures drop.
Step 2. Get Your Air Conditioner Ready for Summer
Wash or replace the AC filter.
Clean outdoor coils and remove leaves or dirt.
Make sure the unit is level and unobstructed.
Test the system early, so repairs can be done before the hot season.
Step 3. Take Care of Your Refrigerator
Vacuum the condenser coils at least twice a year.
Inspect the door seals to keep cold air inside.
Adjust the temperature: 37–40°F (3–4°C) for the fridge, 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer.
Step 4. Maintain Your Washer and Dryer
Run an empty hot cycle with vinegar to remove odors.
Check hoses for cracks or leaks.
Clean the dryer vent to improve safety and efficiency.
Step 5. Don’t Forget Small Appliances
Empty and clean humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and portable heaters.
Store unused devices in a dry place.
Unplug appliances not in use to save energy.
Final Tip
By following these steps at the start of each season, you’ll keep your appliances running smoothly and avoid costly repairs. A few hours of preparation can save you hundreds of dollars and give you peace of mind all year long.
